Rock salt or Kala namak is a very common addition to fruits or vegetable salad. This variant of salt is having different names in different parts of the country. Known by the name of ‘Intuppu‘ in Tamil, ‘Kallu Uppu‘ in Malayalam, ‘Sindhalun’ in Gujarati, ‘Saindhava Lavan‘ in Bengali and ‘Sendha namak’ or ‘kala namak‘ in Hindi this salt has the same chemical composition as of table salt. The salt has different color and texture because of the presence of certain impurities. It is manufactured in small quantity because the availability of the purest form of rock salt is very less when we compare it to the regular crystallized table salt. It is a healthier substitute for table salt because of non-presence of chemicals and a rich source of minerals essential for the human body.
